What You Cannot and Can Do With a Canadian Visitor Visa?
All individuals except permanent residents and citizens of Canada should apply for and get a residence visa to study or work in Canada. If you plan on visiting Canada for recreation, you must obtain a tourist or visitor visa.
Although study and work permits let you undertake or perform a few specific activities, visitor visas have a bigger scope. However, there are restrictions you should keep in mind. Below are what you cannot and can do when travelling to Canada with a Canada tourist visa online or visitor visa.
You Can –
1. Enter as well as Stay
With a visitor visa, you can enter Canada. After you enter Canada, the visa offers you the freedom to stay and travel wherever you want. Remember, this is temporary. A visitor visa is valid for six months. The validity period is generally decided by the officer who issues visas. If the validity period is over, you need to leave Canada and return home.
2. Pass- Through Canada
To pass through Canada, you need a Canada transit visa. But did you know that a visitor visa also lets you pass through Canada in case it is not your ultimate destination?
3. Study a Short-Term Course
Normally, you should have a study permit to join any course in Canada. But there are a couple of exceptions. You may study in Canada with a visitor visa provided you meet the below conditions –
• The institution providing the course is not DLI or ‘Designated Learning Institute’.
• The duration of the program or course is around six months.
• The course is not part of any longer program.
• You will be able to complete the course before the validity of your visa expires.
4. Look for Work
Visitor visas should not be used as a means to look for work, but they do not prohibit you from doing the same. Many employers in Canada prefer meeting candidates before hiring them. So, looking for work when in Canada is easier than trying to find jobs from abroad. When looking for work on a visitor visa, please remember –
• You cannot falsify or hide the reason for visiting Canada.
• You should agree to come back to your country once your visa expires whether or not you find and get work in Canada.
• You should prove that you will not work without a legal work permit.
You Cannot –
1. Stay Permanently
As already mentioned, visitor visas let people enter Canada and stay there temporarily. You can maintain this status as long as your visa does not expire. You cannot stay in Canada with an invalid visa.
2. Apply for Work or Study Permit
You cannot apply for a work or study permit when in Canada with a visitor visa. The visitor visa provides you with the status of a visitor only. You can start the work or study visa procedure once you return. You can only apply for a permit if you have a family member in Canada with a valid work or study permit.
Now that you know what you are allowed to do when going to Canada on a tourist or visitor visa, it is time to learn about the application process. To apply Canadian visa, please submit your passport, bank statements, photographs, cover letter, travel itinerary, etc. The processing time for tourist or visitor visas is 15 days.
